Youth Dance and Art Workshops at Hamdard Youth Program

Hamdard Youth Program Description:

In the Hamdard Youth Program we strive to support students in both their academic and social emotional development. We achieve this through a structured program that involves academic tutoring, social emotional mentoring and arts enrichment activities. In order to meet the needs of our families we provide programming four days of the week from 3 to 6, on school breaks, and over the summer. In addition to the academic support, Hamdard’s youth program offers a safe space where children feel a sense of belonging and community. We encourage children to take ownership of the space through giving them a say in rules and programming offerings. Our hope is that we become a part of the children’s life, a positive part that contributes to their development into responsible, engaged, and successful adults.

Volunteer Needs:

The Hamdard Youth Program is looking for volunteers to teach dance and other art workshops with youth. One of the program objectives is to provide enriching arts experiences for youth so that they can develop their ability to express them selves creatively. The youth in are program have been very passionate about the art and dance they have had the opportunity to do thus far in the program, and are always requesting more.

Albany Park Arts Festival & Intern-American Magnet School

2 Volunteer Opportunities from Isabel Mulcahy, MA alumna:

"I am serving as the dance coordinator for the Albany Park Arts Festival this year and I am looking for volunteers who would like to be part of this great cause. The festival serves as a platform for artists and it celebrates cultural diversity through the arts. I am in charge of Dance day at Northeastern IL University on Thursday June 23rd, as well as helping on the street festival on June 25th & 26th. We are going to need a lot of volunteers for the weekend as well as for the dance day. Here is a website for more information about the festival http://www.albanyparkartsfestival.com/mission.html

I am also part of the wellness committee at my daughters' school, Intern-American Magnet School and we are looking for volunteers to offer movement activities this winter. We are looking to create a list of volunteers who might be interested in offering movement/wellness activities for the students during the winter days. This past winter I was the only volunteer and I offered Zumba classes as well as a class I called Moving Stories. What is great about this volunteer opportunity is that Columbia students who may not be working yet, can continue to develop their therapeutic movement skills in the form of wellness/prevention classes. It can can also generate ideas for possible thesis topics (eg. program development). This volunteer opportunity also looks great on resumes and I'm certain that it helped me get my current job, which involves offering movement therapy groups in schools for at risk youth in the south side."
